Glu Mobile (GLUU) sold off 7% at the close on Friday as investors fretted over the success of the recently released MLB Tap Sports Baseball 2017. A string of games ranking high on initial downloads followed by weak sustained monetization has investors think the worst now. The amazing part as Saturday came to an end is that the franchise baseball game still topped the download charts. And not only just the games category. TSB17 is actually the top downloaded game for the iPhone. The move is significant because games rarely crack the Top 10 due to how Apple (AAPL) calculates the ranking based on any download and not just new downloads. Note how only 3 games make the list. The significance of this ranking is best evidenced by the fact that the 2016 version only reached #13 in overall downloads. The game generally seen as a success never came close to topping apps like Instagram and Snapchat that would've helped garner more visibility. The game eventually reached a top grossing rank of #12 on May 22 as the MLB season hit full force. If TSB17 can maintain a top download ranking over the weekend, Glu Mobile could have a top 10 hit. The stock is clearly not valued for any level of success beyond that achieved last year. Those selling the stock into the close probably made a huge mistake. As I mentioned over and over, the stock was incredibly cheap at $2 without a big hit. A big hit will have the market rerating the stock much higher. Disclosure: Long GLUU, AAPL
